Raiders win big in Pembroke
June 08, 2009

The Rockland Legion Baseball season opened on the road at the new fields for Pembroke on Mattakeesett Street. Pembroke Post 143 put together a nice opening day ceremony, and then it was right into intense baseball that Legion is famous for.
In the early years of 2003 and 2004, Rockland Legion seemed to be always snake bit during their season. Lately however the snake took a break, until this game.
Rockland Post 147 was threatening in the top of the first with two men on and Matt Losciuto at the plate. Losciuto launched a bomb to centerfield, sending Mike Mahoney and Nick Ayala on clear paths to score, until the Snake Bit and Mahoney popped something in his leg rounding third and could run no further. The ensuing confusion over what happened resulted in a double play for Pembroke and an end to the inning for Rockland. The sign of a good team is to fight through adversity, and Post 147 did just that. In the top of the second Cory Mitchell singled, stole second, then third, and scored on a wild pitch. The top of the third went good for Rockland also when Josh Sullivan singled and Nick Ayala walked, setting the stage for A.J. Roache to hit a gap shot single to right center scoring Sullivan and Ayala. Post 147 padded the score a little more with a two run, home run off the bat of Josh Sullivan to left field in the top of the fourth inning giving Rockland a five to nothing lead. Rockland starting pitcher Josh Sullivan kept Pembroke Legion of the base paths allowing only five hits, while striking out nine Post 143 batters. The Rockland combination of Nick Ayala at short stop and Cory Comeau at second base turned two double plays to help keep Pembroke in check and give Sullivan the solid defense he wanted. Rockland Post 147 players A.J. Roache and Cory Comeau went 2 for 4 at the plate, while team mate Josh Sullivan went 3 for 5 at the plate. The Rockland Legion Post 147 "Raiders" defeat Pembroke Legion Post 143 by a score of 8 to 2 // Rockland wins its 2009 season opener
